0:09 so i think this is the biggest challenge 0:10 for managers today because 0:12 as you build out teams if you're a 0:14 global organization 0:15 then not only do you have people all 0:17 over the world but that means there's 0:18 leadership 0:19 outside for us it's the us and 0:22 it can be really challenging so i think 0:24 the first thing you need to do 0:25 is you need to make sure that 0:28 each of the centers where you have 0:30 employees 0:32 understands what your core culture is 0:34 right if you're all dry now it doesn't 0:36 mean it looks the same 0:37 so um i've 0:40 i've i've been on a mission the last 0:42 several years to get to every office 0:44 where we have more than 300 employees 0:46 um around the world in fact about to 0:49 leave on a trip to dubai and mumbai and 0:51 singapore and hong kong 0:53 and having recently been to both 0:55 budapest and glasgow and some of these 0:57 you know not our core offices so you've 0:59 got london and tokyo and hong kong 1:01 and one of the things you see and it's 1:03 it's a it's a beautiful thing to see you 1:05 walk in 1:06 and you know you're in a morgan stanley 1:08 office and you can feel the culture and 1:10 it's palpable and you could take these 1:11 people and you could relocate them 1:13 so then you start to look at how does 1:15 that actually happen 1:16 and i think the leadership needs to 1:19 travel 1:19 and connect face-to-face with people 1:22 responsibility for big decision making 1:25 can't just sit 1:26 in our case in new york because once you 1:28 make the 1:29 other centers feel like they have no 1:31 power in the decision making or the 1:33 product development 1:34 then they're just followers and what you 1:37 want to make sure is that you have 1:38 people that are being thoughtful and 1:40 thinking and so decentralized 1:43 decision making common culture 1:47 leadership that knows each other bring 1:49 people together 1:51 as often as possible keep calls 1:54 sensitive to 1:55 regional issues so for example in my 1:57 department we have a rule that 2:00 global calls can only take place on 2:02 tuesdays and thursdays because for our 2:04 people in asia 2:06 they don't get to have dinner with their 2:08 families because they were having calls 2:09 every 2:10 every night during the week and so by 2:12 taking three nights off the table 2:14 literally um they now know tuesdays and 2:17 third and it comes with the job right if 2:18 you're going to work for morgan stalin 2:20 you're going to work in asia there's 2:21 going to be 2:21 there's going to be calls but your 2:23 family now can have expectations and it 2:25 can manage it so 2:26 be thoughtful about what their issues 2:28 and concerns are and 2:29 when you do hold global meetings and 2:32 calls 2:33 have them participate by having them be 2:35 passive listeners 2:37 they're not participating they're online 2:39 they're watching tv 2:41 sit back with a beer you need to make 2:43 sure that they are really engaged so 2:45 where you can 2:46 use video and use technology where you 2:49 can actually see each other and it just 2:51 completely forces people to engage 2:54
