Environmental Health - The Foundation of Global Health

The first course of the Impacts of the Environment on Global Public Health specialization will provide you with a foundation in environmental health sciences (EHS). We will explore four main topics. The first is an introduction to EHS and the exposure-disease model, key concepts in EHS and environmental health policies that can be used to address and reduce the impacts of environmental health hazards, the application of systems thinking to understand and analyze environmental health issues, and occupational health.

0:09 have you ever wondered how the 0:10 environment around you might be 0:12 impacting your health i'm going to guess 0:14 yes since you're interested in this 0:16 course and i can tell you that the 0:17 answer to that question is a resounding 0:19 yes 0:20 but what about how the environment might 0:22 be impacting your health is it improving 0:24 it 0:25 or worsening it that's a much more 0:27 difficult question to answer 0:29 the good news is though after completing 0:30 this course you will have a much better 0:32 understanding of the impacts of the 0:34 environment on human health 0:36 for better or for worse 0:39 in this course we're going to run 0:40 through four different topics 0:43 we'll begin with an introduction to 0:45 environmental health sciences or ehs 0:48 and what i'll call the exposure disease 0:50 model 0:51 next we're going to talk about some key 0:53 topics in environmental health science 0:55 as well as 0:56 environmental health policy third we'll 0:59 focus on 1:00 system thinking and environmental health 1:03 and then lastly we'll shift to a key 1:05 environment where many of us will spend 1:07 time the workplace in that first week 1:11 let's get a little more granular what 1:13 we're going to talk about is some of the 1:14 basic terminology that we use 1:16 in environmental health sciences we'll 1:18 talk about the exposure disease model 1:20 we'll talk about some significant 1:22 historical events in environmental 1:24 health 1:25 we'll talk about types of environmental 1:26 health hazards and we'll talk about 1:28 pathways 1:29 and routes of exposure through which we 1:31 might be exposed to environmental health 1:33 hazards 1:34 that's what we're going to talk about 1:37 what you're going to do 1:38 is answer some questions that are mapped 1:40 to the exposure disease model 1:42 and you'll also have a chance to explore 1:44 environmental health in the news 1:46 in your own hometown now in the second 1:50 week we're going to focus on 1:51 environmental health policy i'll give 1:53 you an overview of environmental policy 1:55 we'll also evaluate environmental policy 1:58 impacts on public health 1:59 and then we're going to talk about an 2:01 example of a specific 2:02 environmental policy that's what we'll 2:05 talk about 2:06 what you're going to do is actually 2:07 evaluate the impacts of motor vehicle 2:10 safety policies 2:11 either in your own hometown or in one of 2:13 the 50 u.s states 2:16 now in the third week we're going to 2:17 talk about systems thinking and 2:18 environmental health 2:20 the first thing we'll talk about is just 2:21 what the heck is systems thinking 2:23 and we'll also talk about how you can 2:25 apply systems thinking to environmental 2:27 health hazards that's what we'll talk 2:28 about 2:29 what you're going to do is think about 2:31 ways in which you 2:33 might be exposed to an emerging 2:35 environmental hazard nanoparticles 2:37 and you will also use the environmental 2:39 protection agency's toxic release 2:41 inventory database 2:42 to identify some hazards in your own 2:45 hometown 2:47 finally in the fourth week we're going 2:48 to focus on occupational health we'll 2:51 go through an introduction to 2:52 occupational health we'll talk about 2:54 hazards in the workplace 2:56 we'll talk about some of the outcomes 2:57 that we see in occupational health 2:59 as well as some of the agencies that are 3:01 focused on improving 3:03 occupational health and finally how to 3:05 control occupational hazards 3:07 that's what we'll talk about what we'll 3:09 do you are going to think about 3:11 reasons why workers might not want to 3:13 report the fact that they're 3:14 injured or ill in their workplace to 3:16 their employers 3:17 and you're also going to look at some 3:18 photographs and identify potential ways 3:21 that you could control 3:22 different hazards in a variety of 3:24 workplaces 3:26 so by the end of this course you're 3:28 going to have an understanding of the 3:29 basic concepts of environmental health 3:32 you'll be able to describe environmental 3:34 health policy approaches 3:36 you'll see how systems thinking 3:37 approaches can be applied to even very 3:39 complex 3:40 and challenging environmental health 3:42 issues and you'll be able to understand 3:44 the vital importance of occupational 3:46 health 3:47 within the broader discipline of public 3:49 health 3:50 so with that i hope you enjoy the course 3:52 and i hope that you have a much better 3:54 understanding of environmental health 3:56 after you complete it
