0:06 the next 0:06 exercise is designed to help you with a 0:08 document that plays an essential role 0:11 in the professional world and your own 0:13 career prospects 0:14 your resume you're going to get the 0:17 chance to use what we've learned about 0:18 framing 0:19 and the words under the words to play 0:21 around with various ways to market 0:23 yourself 0:23 to different employers of course if 0:26 you're new to creating a resume or just 0:28 anxious about the process 0:29 don't worry you're not alone nobody's 0:31 born knowing how to make one 0:33 and there's actually a great line in the 0:35 novel love by toni morrison 0:37 in which she describes someone who 0:39 somewhat embarrassingly pronounces 0:41 resumes 0:42 with two syllables at one point i guess 0:44 sort of like the word 0:45 resume but even if you're new to the 0:48 experience 0:49 i hope you at least try to put one 0:50 together focusing in particular on the 0:52 following question 0:54 how can i make the words under the words 0:56 of my resume 0:57 match the words under the words of the 0:59 organization i hope to work for 1:01 what i mean is that you want to 1:03 communicate that you would be 1:05 a good fit for them so maybe we can 1:08 reframe that question 1:09 like this how can i describe my 1:12 education 1:13 skills and experiences in a way that 1:15 will make it easy for the organization 1:17 to recognize that i would be 1:19 a great addition to its team to help you 1:22 i want to share what the claim design 1:24 firm ideo looks for 1:26 in its new hires the framework they use 1:29 may give you some ideas about what's 1:31 missing or what needs highlighting in 1:33 your own materials 1:34 it's pretty simple actually ideo says 1:37 they want 1:38 t-shaped people the horizontal part of 1:41 the t 1:42 represents breath ideo wants people who 1:44 are more than one dimensional 1:46 but they also want people who have depth 1:49 and a certain level of expertise 1:51 that's the vertical part here's how tim 1:53 brown the ceo of ideo explains the 1:55 balance 1:57 the vertical stroke of the t is a depth 1:59 of skill that allows people to 2:01 contribute to the creative process 2:03 that can be from any number of different 2:05 fields an industrial designer 2:07 an architect a social scientist a 2:09 business specialist 2:11 or a mechanical engineer now for the 2:14 horizontal stroke 2:15 the horizontal stroke of the t is the 2:17 disposition for collaboration 2:19 across disciplines it is composed of two 2:22 things 2:23 first empathy empathy is important 2:26 because it allows people to imagine the 2:28 problem from another perspective 2:30 to stand in somebody else's shoes second 2:34 they tend to get very enthusiastic about 2:36 other people's disciplines 2:38 to the point that they may actually 2:40 start to practice them 2:42 i know of course that ideo is just one 2:43 organization with a specific set of 2:45 criteria 2:46 but this notion of being t-shaped can be 2:48 a good starting point when applying for 2:50 all kinds of positions 2:52 particularly given how interdisciplinary 2:54 and cross-functional 2:55 many jobs now are so look at your resume 2:58 we'll be clear to the person reading it 3:00 that you have breath 3:01 will they be able to quickly see that 3:03 you have a valuable range of skills 3:06 interests and experiences and what about 3:08 depth 3:09 have you sufficiently communicated your 3:11 expertise 3:13 what are the words phrases bullet points 3:15 that signal 3:16 that you know how to dive deep into a 3:18 subject and can bring that know-how 3:20 with you to everything you do i offer 3:23 these questions for two reasons 3:25 first as a tool for revision if you have 3:28 breadth 3:29 and depth but haven't necessarily 3:30 highlighted that on your resume 3:32 think about making some edits 3:34 particularly if your target audience 3:36 might be looking for those things 3:38 second i offer them as a tool for 3:41 collection 3:42 if you don't have breath or depth or you 3:44 think you're lacking in at least one of 3:45 them 3:46 consider trying to seek out some 3:48 opportunities to develop those qualities 3:50 in the coming weeks months and years 3:53 with these two goals in mind 3:54 i hope you use the resume review 3:56 assignment to both practice reframing 3:58 bullet points you already have 4:00 and to identify bullet points you want 4:02 to be able to write in the future 4:04 it's a way of strategically looking 4:06 backward and forward 4:07 all at the same time 4:17 you
