0:01 and in this next video we're going to be 0:03 talking about how to 0:04 expand your network and we're going to 0:07 be starting 0:08 with your home institution and so for me 0:12 my home institution is university of 0:14 michigan 0:15 so i'm going to click on that 0:19 but for you whatever your home 0:20 institution is you would 0:22 then put it into the search bar and 0:23 click the appropriate 0:25 link and so now if you look under the 0:29 alumni tab you can click on it 0:33 and then you see there's several 0:34 different filters that pop up 0:36 that are really helpful when you're 0:38 figuring out who you want to connect 0:39 with and expand your network with 0:41 and so the first one is this search bar 0:44 and the search bar 0:45 is really helpful because you can type 0:48 in specific keywords specific companies 0:51 um specific titles that professionals 0:53 may have 0:54 that you're looking for and this is a 0:56 really great way 0:58 to search for keywords in industries you 1:01 may be interested in 1:02 um for example if you're really 1:04 interested in working 1:06 in engineering you might type in 1:09 engineering is your keyword and then it 1:12 would filter out 1:12 all of the professionals who don't align 1:15 with that to only show you the ones who 1:16 do 1:18 and in a similar vein there's a start 1:20 year and end year 1:22 so if you're looking for professionals 1:24 who've graduated 1:25 a long time ago then you could connect 1:28 with those folks 1:29 or if you want to speak with recent 1:30 graduates you have that ability as well 1:34 and then there's two separate filters 1:37 you can choose either where they live or 1:39 where they work 1:41 so if you're someone who's really 1:44 interested 1:44 in moving to the greater denver area 1:48 you can see that 4 571 1:51 u of m alumni live and work in that area 1:54 and that's really helpful if you want to 1:56 start building your network in that 1:57 space 1:58 because that's your targeted city that 2:00 you want to move to eventually 2:02 and on the flip side if you're really 2:04 interested in a specific company 2:06 you can use the filter where they work 2:09 and that'll then narrow it down to 2:11 alumni who work at a specific company 2:14 so if you can see um for google we have 2:18 1537 2:19 um alumni on the linkedin platform 2:22 and you can connect with all of those 2:24 folks regardless of where they live 2:27 and it'll direct you to those folks and 2:30 a really great thing that linkedin does 2:32 is that you can use multiple filters at 2:34 once so if you want to look for 2:37 folks who work at google and in the 2:40 greater denver area you can apply both 2:42 of those filters at once 2:43 to really narrow down your search to 2:46 find exactly who you're looking for 2:49 and this expanding your network 2:52 segment is really important because 2:55 right now as an undergrad 2:56 as a graduate as an alumni wherever you 3:00 are in your career journey it's really 3:02 important to make sure that you're 3:03 establishing 3:04 connections with folks so you can always 3:07 find out new opportunities and find out 3:09 new resources 3:10 and leveraging your home institution is 3:12 a great first step 3:14 because you already have that 3:15 association with those people
