0:04 hi everyone 0:04 my name is deirdre and i'm a current 0:06 senior at the university of michigan ann 0:08 arbor 0:09 and today we're going to be talking 0:10 about how to leverage the net 0:12 professional networking platform 0:14 linkedin 0:15 and as a current undergrad myself i know 0:17 how difficult it can be to navigate 0:19 student recruitment 0:20 and so what i'm hoping to do in these 0:21 videos is share what i know so that i 0:24 can better equip you all 0:25 to handle these difficult situations and 0:28 so in these videos i'm going to be 0:30 covering three topics 0:31 the first how to create a linkedin 0:33 profile the second 0:35 how to expand your network and three how 0:37 to code message professionals and alumni 0:40 and in this first video i'm going to be 0:42 talking about how to create 0:44 your linkedin profile and now i'm going 0:46 to be sharing my screen 0:52 okay so on my browser i'm going to type 0:55 in linkedin 0:57 and you can see here in the top right 0:59 there are two 1:00 separate sections either join now or 1:03 sign in and if we click join now 1:06 you can see that you need to make you 1:08 need to have an email and password 1:10 and then click agree to join but since i 1:13 already have an account i'm going to 1:14 sign in 1:23 and now i'm on my linkedin home page and 1:26 we're going to go to my personal profile 1:32 so here you can see there's a lot of 1:33 room to personalize your per 1:35 your profile and we're going to break it 1:37 down so we can better understand the 1:39 different components 1:40 that go into creating a detailed profile 1:44 and so the first of which is your 1:46 headshot 1:47 and so your headshot is really important 1:49 because it gives professionals and 1:51 recruiters a glimpse of 1:52 who you are and what you look like 1:54 visually and that's a really great way 1:56 to kind of give everyone a human aspect 1:59 of yourself 2:01 and in a similar way with the background 2:03 photo um you also want to make sure that 2:05 you're accurately 2:06 representing your interests and who you 2:09 are 2:10 so you can either choose to put in a 2:13 professional photo such as an experience 2:17 you had 2:17 with your work or related job experience 2:21 or your institution or on the other hand 2:24 you could insert an interest of yours 2:28 but regardless make sure that it's 2:30 relevant 2:31 um to your professional life so that if 2:34 someone were to ask you 2:35 oh i saw this on your linkedin you'd be 2:37 able to talk about it in a way that 2:39 makes sense to your career 2:42 and so now we're going to talk about the 2:44 intro section 2:47 and so here you can see that um 2:50 the aster takes define what you have to 2:53 write and include but 2:55 i think it's really important to also 2:56 include your home institution 2:59 and for me this is the university of 3:01 michigan but 3:02 for you um just put your home 3:04 institution 3:06 um and that gives people a great 3:08 connection to see that 3:09 oh hey this person is from um this 3:12 institution or university that's awesome 3:14 um because that really great creates a 3:17 great way to 3:18 bridge yourself with other professionals 3:20 on linkedin 3:22 and in a similar way i think it's a 3:25 great way to 3:26 insert where you are in your home 3:29 country 3:30 because that gives professionals and 3:32 recruiters the ability 3:34 to offer opportunities to you or for you 3:36 to seek out opportunities in that region 3:39 so that um you can find um relevant um 3:43 opportunities and resources 3:47 okay and now we're going to talk briefly 3:50 about the about section 3:51 and in the about section this is a great 3:54 way to 3:55 talk about your passions and your 3:56 interests and maybe even your hobbies 3:59 depending on the tone you want to convey 4:02 this section is really important because 4:04 it gives a quick intro about yourself in 4:06 a way that a resume 4:09 can't do and so really play up what 4:12 you're passionate about what you really 4:13 like to do 4:15 and what you're hoping to gain on this 4:17 platform 4:19 and moving to the next section the 4:21 featured section this is a great way to 4:23 show any 4:24 media links any articles 4:27 anything along those lines on your 4:30 profile because it then it shows 4:31 professionals and other recruiters 4:34 on different resources that you've 4:36 created and 4:37 while this changes depending on the 4:39 industry you want to go into 4:41 it's always a great way to include any 4:43 relevant um 4:44 work you've done so people can see your 4:46 projects and with that said 4:48 it's also a great way to put your resume 4:50 on there so 4:51 if anyone were to come across your 4:53 profile they would have access to a more 4:55 detailed description of what you've done 4:57 which is always awesome since this is 4:59 the professional networking site 5:04 and then is the experience section 5:06 similar to your resume this is a great 5:08 way 5:09 to show everybody a more built out 5:11 version of your resume 5:12 so they can see where you've worked what 5:14 you've done 5:16 and really see um all of your 5:19 accomplishments 5:20 and you can put and include specific 5:24 projects that you've done per your role 5:26 so everyone can see what you've done in 5:28 each specific position you've worked at 5:32 and then like i mentioned in the intro 5:34 it's really important to include your 5:36 education or your institution so that 5:39 people can make the connection and 5:40 association between you and that place 5:44 and then finally for your skills and 5:46 endorsements 5:47 it's really important to include any 5:49 skills you think 5:50 are relevant to the industry you want to 5:52 go into or any skills that you have 5:54 because when professionals and 5:56 recruiters look at 5:58 resumes and job descriptions they want 6:00 to 6:01 make sure that what you have and what 6:03 your skills are align with what they're 6:05 looking for 6:06 and by putting your skills on your 6:08 profile page that's a great way to show 6:10 everybody that you have what it takes 6:14 and then if you'd like you can include 6:16 your interests at the bottom of your 6:18 profile page 6:19 and this is a great way to show 6:20 everybody what groups 6:22 companies or people you're interested in 6:25 so 6:25 they get a little bit more of a sense of 6:27 who you are as a person and 6:29 who you like to focus on 6:33 and with that said it's a really great 6:35 way to build out 6:36 your um professional self using linkedin 6:40 because many people use it today and 6:42 starting with your 6:43 profile is a great way to start using 6:46 the linkedin platform
