Introduction to United States Civics (Optional Overview) / Lesson 2 of 5

Executive Branch

0 minutes

We will now explore the executive branch through an examination of the powers vested in the president. As you watch the following videos, please keep the following in mind:

  • Reflect on the role of the US Constitution. Should it be read as a living document? Or should it be ready strictly as it is written?
  • Consider the role of the Electoral College. Does it continue to serve its intended purpose?
  • Think about why the President has so few formal powers outlined in the Constitution
  • If the President is granted informal powers based on interpretations of the Constitution, what does that indicate about how the document should be read?
  • Reflect on the ability of the President to grant her/himself implied powers. How does this relate to separation of powers?
