Sustainable Food Teach-Out

Sustainable Food Teach-Out Introduction

1 minute

Welcome! In this Teach-Out, we will explore the complexities of the food system and how we can, individually and collectively, create food habits that reduce our impact on climate change. Together with the two co-hosts for the Teach-Out, Dr. Michaela Zint and Benjamin Morse, you will explore the impact of 1) what we choose to eat, 2) where we source our food from, and 3) how we can manage and reduce food-related waste.

This Teach-Out was inspired by another online learning experience developed by Dr. Michaela Zint and a group of students from the University of Michigan, the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) Act on Climate: Steps to Individual, Community, and Political Action. As a result of that course, we learned just how much impact the food systems has and decided to create this Teach out to dive deeper into the topic.

If you want to learn more about how you can translate learning into action on climate change, please also check out Act on Climate: Steps to Individual, Community, and Political Action. You’ll see a few videos there that we repurposed for this Teach-Out but also many more on other important topics: energy, transportation and the built environments impact on climate.

Dr. Michaela Zint is an Arthur Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan’s School for Environmental Sustainability, College of Literature, Science & the Arts, and School of Education. Full bio here.

Benjamin Morse is a Design Manager in the Office of Academic Innovation at the University of Michigan and a graduate from the School for Environment and Sustainability and the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan. Full bio here.
