Sustainable Food Teach-Out

Grow A Garden

2 minutes

Why: You can’t get any closer to sustainable food than by growing it in your own backyard. Growing your own food helps reduce your reliance on less efficient sources.

How: If you’re brand new to gardening, you may be surprised at how much food you can grow in small spaces and without a ton of effort. Here are some ways to get started:

  • Visit local parks, churches, or community centers that might have community garden plots available. You can also check databases online, like the American Community Garden Association, that might offer some assistance in finding community gardens nearby.

  • Check out online guides for personal gardens (like this one) or get a book at your local library about best practices.

  • Get some tips and tricks to organic gardening by visiting the Planet Natural website.

Tip: Once you start reaping the benefits of your garden, you may find yourself with more veggies than you’re able to eat fresh! To make sure it doesn’t go to waste - try canning or freezing, sharing with friends, donating if possible, and composting if necessary.
