Roe v. Wade Teach-Out

Consequences of the Decisions / Lesson 4 of 5

Financial Impacts

2 minutes

There are significant financial implications when abortions are made inaccessible. Please take a few minutes to read about Dr. Sarah Miller’s U-M study that found that women who were denied access to a wanted abortion were 81% more likely to experience negative financial events (e.g., debt or bankruptcy) after five years.

This aligns with previous research done in this area. The Guttmacher Institute found that 50% of Americans seeking abortions are under the federal poverty line. This has major implications, as these Americans may not have the funds necessary to travel to another state for medical care. Unable to access an abortion, they have to carry the baby to term and grapple with the corresponding financial strain (e.g., hospital bills and baby products).
