Case Study: University of Michigan - the University’s Perspective / Lesson 1 of 11

Case Study: University of Michigan - the University’s Perspective

5 minutes

The University of Michigan has been operating under the legal constraints of a ban on affirmative action since Proposal 2 was passed by state voters in 2006. Because cultivating a racially and ethnically diverse student body and campus community has remained a priority, the University has made considerable commitments to holistic admission practices as well campus wide diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

In the following video, we first hear again from Maya, who offers an overview of Proposal 2 and the amicus brief that the University of Michigan filed prior to the 2023 U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

Later in this lesson, we’ll dive into the impact the affirmative action ban has had on student representation and DEIJ (diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice) initiatives on campus.
