Learner Stories
I truly have never met a better supporting faculty and staff. It feels like a really small and tight-knit group. We never met in person, but I still feel like we built a relationship.
Merritt Dailey Master of Engineering (MEng) in Energy Systems Engineering, '21
Is an Online Degree Right for You?
Pursuing an online degree carries a different set of challenges from a traditional in-person program. Online learners need to be self-starters with strong time management, comfortable with technology, and be able to advocate for themselves. If this describes you, and your circumstances require the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of an online education, Michigan Online’s degree programs may be for you.
FAQ's
What does 100% online mean?
It means all courses in the degree program are accessible through the online learning platform with no on-campus requirement. These courses may be asynchronous, so you can complete them on your own time, or they could be synchronous, meaning there is a live session taught by your instructor at a set time and date. Some programs have both asynchronous and synchronous elements.
What does hybrid mean?
A hybrid degree program indicates there is a required in-person portion of the curriculum. In some cases, these are residencies or clinicals that the learner can complete locally. Other programs require on-campus sessions at the University of Michigan. Review the curriculum of the program you’re interested in to see if there is a required in-person component.
Are these taught and developed by U-M faculty?
Instructors for online degree programs are the same faculty who teach the residential programs at the University of Michigan, and they work with U-M experts to design their courses. Some programs also feature industry experts who can provide real-world insight and experience.
Do graduates of online programs earn the same degree as graduates of on-campus programs at the University of Michigan?
All diplomas and transcripts are identical to those earned by graduates of other fully-accredited University of Michigan programs. These documents do not differentiate between residential and online degree programs.
Will I interact with my instructor and other students in the program?
Yes! All online degree programs have regular communication and interaction with faculty and classmates. Courses may include synchronous sessions, office hours, student discussion boards and collaborative assignments. All courses in online programs have regular and substantive interaction between faculty and students.
What kind of support will I receive as an online student?
Online learners have access to a variety of student support measures such as academic advising, networking opportunities, and technical support. Support can also be accessed through live office hours and messaging channels with faculty and advisors. At the start of your program, the advisor and student services team for your degree will help with onboarding you to the program.
Is there any flexibility in the amount of time needed to complete an online degree?
Many online degree programs offer a choice between part-time and full-time enrollment. You are encouraged to speak to the admissions and academic advising team of your program to develop a graduation plan that works for you. This will help you take into consideration all program requirements, as some have an in-person residency or field work to consider.
What is the cost of an online degree program?
Please refer to the information for the specific program you are interested in for program costs. This varies by number of credits required and academic discipline. The degree program page will also provide information about financial aid and scholarships if available.
