coming to college is an exciting
0:12
adventure but it also comes with
0:13
unknowns most students wonder "What am I
0:16
going to do after Michigan?" It's an
0:18
important question and it's perfectly
0:20
okay not to have an answer right away
0:22
your journey at Michigan is a time for
0:24
exploration to discover what you enjoy
0:26
and what you're skilled at so if you're
0:28
not sure what your pathway looks like
0:29
yet you're in great company let's meet
0:31
three students who are embracing this
0:33
time of discovery and figuring it out as
0:35
they go these students all had different
0:37
paths the first came in undecided and
0:40
through experimentation and community
0:41
found her interest the second came to
0:44
Michigan with a clear goal and her
0:45
campus experiences helped her to decide
0:47
to pivot to a new goal the final student
0:49
came in with a very specific interest
0:51
and through his classes and engagements
0:53
was able to understand and deepen that
0:54
interest further let's listen to their
0:56
stories to hear how they explored their
0:58
career interest
1:01
when I first got to Michigan I didn't
1:03
know what I wanted to do and that felt
1:05
really overwhelming i was a first gen
1:08
transfer student in winter so it felt
1:11
like I had to have it all figured out
1:13
right away after a recommendation from a
1:16
transfer mentor I found a major that
1:18
piqued my interest communication and
1:20
media
1:22
over the summer after my first full year
1:25
I knew I wanted to get an internship i
1:29
felt like I should get a traditional
1:30
internship for my major something like
1:33
marketing or communications
1:35
i decided that if I did get an
1:37
internship I wanted it to be one I was
1:40
excited for and for a company I
1:42
connected with i asked myself what I
1:45
felt I really gravitated towards on
1:47
campus what I actually look forward to
1:50
doing
1:51
i realized how much I care about human
1:53
rights specifically women's rights orgs I
1:58
ended up landing a PR internship based
2:00
on female leadership for the summer and
2:02
it turned out that I didn't love it i
2:06
talked about my experiences with a
2:08
career coach at U of M and I realized I
2:11
was way more passionate about advocacy
2:13
than I was about the behind-the-scenes
2:16
work of PR
2:18
with this realization
2:20
I felt a little panicked i felt like I
2:24
needed to change my major to women's
2:25
studies to be able to go for the job I
2:27
wanted but I didn't really have time to
2:30
change my major
2:32
as I was picking classes for the
2:34
following semester I realized my major
2:36
was flexible enough to make it my own by
2:39
picking the classes that work for me
2:42
through all of these challenges
2:45
I was so happy to have my on campus job i
2:49
found it through the student employment
2:50
website and it ended up giving me a real
2:53
sense of community a comfortable space
2:56
with kind encouraging people who
2:59
genuinely care about me and my success
3:02
i think students can lose sight of that
3:04
sometimes we get so caught up in trying
3:07
to make everything work that we forget
3:09
how much it matters to be in spaces that
3:12
remind us to believe in ourselves
3:14
moving forward I'm excited to continue
3:17
advocating for causes I care about using
3:20
my major to make a meaningful difference
3:23
when I came into college I thought my
3:25
path was set i would become a biomedical
3:28
engineer focused on biology and
3:30
biotechnology
3:32
i joined a research learning community
3:34
and participated in the undergraduate
3:36
research opportunity program or UROP
3:39
for short excited to explore what a
3:41
research career entails
3:43
however it didn't take long for me to
3:45
realize that spending long hours in the
3:48
lab focusing on repetitive tasks by
3:50
myself really wasn't for me i missed the
3:54
human connection the teamwork and the
3:56
chance to see the bigger picture i found
3:59
myself searching for a setting where
4:01
collaboration and interaction were at
4:03
the forefront which felt more natural to
4:05
me
4:07
the turning point came when I talked
4:08
with my principal investigator about how
4:10
I was feeling with my experiences they
4:13
helped me see that I have a lot of
4:15
options outside of the lab this led me
4:18
to start exploring other careers and
4:20
made me realize I'm a better fit for
4:22
business i ended up switching my major
4:24
two more times before realizing that I
4:27
could use my industrial and operations
4:29
engineering major for business-oriented
4:31
positions
4:32
these shifts led me to embrace
4:34
consulting and venture capital as areas
4:36
where I could grow and excel by joining
4:39
clubs that I found at Festi-Fall and
4:41
engaging with alumni through resources
4:43
at the career center I found
4:45
opportunities that align with my
4:46
evolving interests in business and
4:48
entrepreneurship
4:50
now I'm excited about a future where I
4:52
can use my skills in collaborative
4:54
environments to make a significant
4:56
impact
4:57
i have been interested in politics since
4:59
I was 12 so when I came in undeclared to
5:02
LSA I mostly chose classes in pre-law
5:05
polisci and public policy my academic
5:08
interests were influenced by my family's
5:10
experiences with the Flint water crisis
5:13
understanding how policy can have an
5:14
impact on real people
5:17
one important moment for me was when I
5:19
attended a guest lecture on campus about
5:21
climate change listening to the speaker
5:23
talk about activism and the unique
5:25
political landscape really resonated
5:27
with me inspiring me to think about how
5:29
I could turn my passion into real world
5:31
impact
5:34
i had a good idea of the policies I
5:36
wanted to learn about but realized that
5:39
I was thinking about policy too narrowly
5:42
there are a lot of important issues to
5:43
be tackled so I declared my major in
5:46
public policy i added a minor in modern
5:49
Greek due to an ongoing interest in my
5:51
Greek heritage
5:53
something I had never considered before
5:54
was the overlap of my major and minor
5:57
that I could combine these interests in
5:58
foreign affairs policy
6:02
looking back I think it all fell into
6:04
place because I put myself out there and
6:06
took advantage of the opportunities that
6:08
presented themselves to me attending
6:10
lectures talking to faculty and
6:12
attending career fairs
6:14
this has shifted my career aspirations i
6:17
started college thinking I was headed
6:19
straight to law school now I see that
6:21
maybe law school isn't my immediate path
6:24
or even my ultimate one my interests
6:26
have shifted toward foreign affairs and
6:28
the broader field of policy something I
6:30
had never considered before this
6:33
unexpected journey has changed my plans
6:35
and I'm excited to see where it takes me
6:39
all of the pathways you just heard about
6:41
are normal whether you come to Michigan
6:43
decided and deepen your interest you
6:45
enter without knowing your next steps or
6:47
you come in with one idea and change
6:48
your mind later it's all normal no
6:51
experience is better than the other and
6:53
we all have unique pathways it's also
6:55
normal to have a range of emotions about
6:57
deciding on your major and your career
6:58
pathway excitement disappointment
7:01
frustration confusion anticipation the
7:04
students stories show us that the most
7:06
important thing that you can do is to
7:07
try things out some students went to see
7:10
speakers others gained insight from
7:12
their clubs their classes and their
7:13
internships we also often hear students
7:16
benefiting from shadowing and from
7:17
networking with alumni the best way to
7:20
figure out what you like is to
7:21
experiment so we encourage you to get
7:22
out there even if you're not sure what
7:24
you're interested in just yet as you
7:26
progress through your program lean into
7:28
your community at Michigan this can help
7:30
you make sense of what you're
7:31
experiencing connecting with career
7:33
coaches fellow students staff and
7:35
faculty will give you the space to
7:37
debrief your Michigan experience and
7:39
give you ideas for how to test your
7:40
interest the Michigan community is here
7:42
to support you and your career journey
