Defining Student Debt, Loan Repayment, and Loan Forgiveness

Throughout this Teach-Out, we’ll be using many terms related to student debt and student loan programs. We’ll define a few key terms below:

  • Student Debt: Any kind of debt, including student loans, that is incurred in order to pursue some kind of education or training.
  • Loan Repayment: Paying back money you borrowed by making scheduled payments to a loan provider.
  • Loan Forgiveness: Removal of a loan borrower’s obligation to repay all or a portion of a loan. This is the same as loan cancellation.
