Learn More About Science in the News

Science in the News (SITN) is a graduate student organization at Harvard with the goal of opening the lines of communication between research scientists and the general public by providing accessible scientific information from scientists themselves. To achieve this mission, we provide graduate student scientists with training and various opportunities to communicate cutting edge scientific research to non-scientists. We serve unmet needs on both sides- providing the community with a free, interactive, and reliable source of scientific information, and training young scientists in communication practices. Our training paradigm involves the production of a wide variety of content for the public, which is refined through an iterative peer-to-peer feedback system unique to our organization. This content takes multiple forms including interactive public seminars, science meetups at local bars, podcasts, daylong science conferences, science-art galleries, model organism zoos, blog articles, and daylong conferences; all produced by graduate students. At Science in the News, we focus on engaging the public in conversation to create a two-way interaction where each party learns from the other. In this Teach-Out, we provide you with a number of guides that we utilize on a daily basis for the production of our events, articles, and social media content. We also have included examples of some of our content including our podcast on science communication, our Model Organism Zoo worksheet, and links to our most viewed articles. We hope you’ll explore our online archive of articles, seminars, and other productions available on our website
