Russia-Ukraine War: One Year Later Teach-Out

Historical Context and Timeline / Lesson 1 of 3

Historical Origins of the Conflict - Matthew Pauly

4 minutes

After a year of war, it still may be difficult to understand how we got here. This first lesson provides important historical context leading up to the Russian invasion of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and the country’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, in an attempt to overthrow Ukraine’s government in February 2022. We will hear from experts about the origin of the conflict, significant events leading up to the 2022 Russian invasion, and how Ukrainians view the ongoing war to better understand how we got to the current situation in Ukraine. Lastly, after gaining an understanding of the historical context, you’ll explore resources to understand the current status of the war.

Repurposed from a previous Teach-Out, the following videos provide historical context to understand the relationship between Ukraine and Russia. First, we hear from Matthew Pauly, Associate Professor in the Department of History at Michigan State University, who talks us through history in the region from the 1700s onward.
