Hurricanes: What's Next? Teach-Out

The Future of Modeling and Data Collection with Richard Rood / Lesson 2 of 2

The history and future of weather modeling with Richard Rood

15 minutes

What we'll cover in this conversation

Dr. Richard Rood is the Dow Sustainability Distinguished Faculty Fellow in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan. Professor Rood teaches a class on climate change and the interface of climate change with all aspects of society. This has evolved into a class on climate change problem-solving. Because of this class, more and more, his research interests are on the use of information from climate projections in adaptation to global warming. His current physical-climate research is focused on bridging the study of weather and climate. You can read more about Professor Rood at his faculty page.

In this conversation, Perry and Richard cover the following topics:

  • The increased frequency and magnitude of hurricanes in 2017.
  •
  • The role of El Nino and La Nina in hurricane formation.
  •
  • The meteorological triggers for hurricanes.
  •
  • The range of data sources that inform weather models.
  •
  • The role of new technology like the GOES-16 satellite in the future of forecasting.
  •
  • The role of warming ocean temperatures in changing weather patterns.

Please keep in mind that this segment was filmed in September 2017 and may be slightly out-of-date. We hope that you find all of the content in this Teach-Out engaging and informative!
