CRISPR Gene Editing Teach-Out

Oversight of CRISPR Technology / Lesson 2 of 3

Patent Law - Dianne Nicol

6 minutes

In the next video, Dianne Nicol dives into patent law for pharmaceuticals and medical technologies. Patent law gives the creator a length of time, often twenty years, where they exclusively have rights to make and sell the product. The US Supreme Court and Australian High Court determined that you cannot patent genetic information (e.g., BRCA genes). However, it is more complicated when we consider genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

She then speaks about the specifics of patenting CRISPR, and gives an example of a patent dispute related to the expansion of CRISPR. This work moved the CRISPR model from simple organisms to animals and plants.
