so we've been talking this week about 0:08 people who live big lives who live 0:11 transcending lives and have very strong 0:15 purposes and we've been talking about 0:17 how you apply the purpose to becoming 0:20 more purposeful so that's what we're 0:22 going to talk about in this session 0:23 we're gonna talk about how remember we 0:26 discussed the things that you value the 0:28 most create these be goals in your life 0:32 so I want to be a visionary leader I 0:35 want to be a family man I want to be a 0:37 seeker of truth a friend a fun-loving 0:40 person these are all beagles and that's 0:42 awesome this comprises my purpose in my 0:45 life that's very important but to be 0:47 purposeful I need to enact these beagles 0:51 somehow I need to implement these 0:53 beagles in my daily life so in order to 0:56 be a family man I might have to do 0:59 certain things like I have to learn how 1:02 to be calm I have to learn how to be 1:05 energetic I have to learn how to be more 1:07 generous I have to learn how to be a 1:09 better listener or to be positive 1:11 we call these do goals because these are 1:13 the things you need to do in order to be 1:16 purposeful you cannot be purposeful 1:19 without having a purpose so the beagles 1:22 form your purpose and just remember 1:24 those vehicles are created by the things 1:26 that you value the most in your life but 1:29 from that then you need some do goals in 1:32 order to enact those things to become 1:34 purposeful does that make sense 1:36 so then being calm being a broader 1:41 thinker being energetic that's not 1:43 specific enough and a lot of people come 1:46 in and say well I want to be more 1:49 energized or I want to have more 1:50 willpower I want more discipline I want 1:53 to lose weight I want to do X Y or Z 1:55 well that's fine but you need action 1:57 goals as well you need specific habits 2:00 that you can start developing so in 2:03 order to be calm because you are a 2:05 family man maybe I'll give you a 2:08 serenity meditation that helps you 2:10 become more calm to be positive maybe 2:13 I'll give you a little exercise to see 2:15 the positive things in stress to see the 2:18 things in 2:19 dress that are actually in a positive 2:21 way challenging to you and you go wow I 2:23 don't mind that stress in fact I embrace 2:25 that stress and I'm learning how to be 2:26 positive in the face of stress maybe to 2:29 be a better listener I need some type of 2:31 way of not interrupting people as much 2:35 so maybe I've created a game called the 2:37 no interruption game to be more 2:39 connected maybe I need dance lessons so 2:42 these are called action goals so this 2:44 diagram is really important because now 2:46 we're starting to talk about how our 2:48 purpose relates to our behavior it 2:51 relates to our actions every single day 2:54 so when we think about this we have a 2:56 why for our actions think about how many 2:59 things you do that have no real clear 3:02 why to them and that's what we're gonna 3:04 ask you to start doing to think about 3:06 every action you take does it have a 3:08 good strong why and does it relate to 3:11 some purpose that you have and then 3:13 conversely we'll look at how these be 3:17 goals this purpose that you have needs 3:19 to be enacted in a way how do I become 3:22 purposeful so there's both oh why and 3:25 how to this so just for example I want 3:29 to be a visionary leader now very 3:31 recently I ended up with knee 3:33 replacement surgery now that can be 3:35 fairly painful and it has been the rehab 3:38 can be difficult and slow and it has 3:40 been so I've needed to find out given 3:44 the fact that I had this knee surgery 3:45 but I also need to be a visionary leader 3:47 how can I continue to be a visionary 3:51 leader I know the why the why is I need 3:54 to be a visionary leader but how can I 3:55 do that 3:56 so I discover wow I need to be resilient 3:59 but being resilient 4:01 that's a do goal and that's a little bit 4:03 vague I know I need to be resilient but 4:05 what are the action goals for that well 4:08 I can look this up and find out Wow 4:10 one way to be more resilient in the face 4:12 of knee replacement surgery is to move 4:15 around when I'm watching TV so during TV 4:18 commercials I can get up let's say I'm 4:20 watching the Michigan Wolverines play 4:21 basketball and there are million 4:23 commercials during those million 4:25 commercials I can get up and walk around 4:28 a million times which is great and that 4:30 might make me more resilient which 4:32 helps me become a visionary leader so 4:34 there's a why to my movement during TV 4:37 commercials there's also how to become a 4:40 visionary leader now by the way just in 4:45 reference to my knee replacement surgery 4:48 this is a real study that was done a few 4:50 years ago the role of purpose in life in 4:52 recovery from knee surgery I read this 4:55 and thought wow okay I really need to 4:57 focus on my purpose in life while I'm 4:59 recovering this study found that during 5:02 knee replacement rehab while I'm 5:05 rehabilitating I need to engage in a 5:08 stronger purpose in life because it 5:10 produces less negative effect in other 5:12 words sad feelings less depression and a 5:15 lot of people who go through this 5:17 painful rehabilitation after knee 5:19 replacement surgery start becoming 5:21 depressed they also become anxious and 5:24 having a strong purpose in life 5:25 predicted less negative effect less 5:28 depression less anxiety and actually 5:31 more positive effect so that was great I 5:34 decided to take that on so if you're 5:36 using the purposeful application you can 5:39 do what I did a few weeks ago which was 5:41 to set an intention to become more 5:43 resilient that is a Duggal now why did I 5:47 set that do goal because of my purpose 5:50 and my purpose is defined as being a 5:53 family man a visionary leader etc I've 5:56 shown this before this is based on my be 5:59 goals right so my be goals are telling 6:03 me I need to be more resilient at the 6:05 same time my due goal is saying okay 6:08 here's what I need to do I have to ask 6:11 how do I become more resilient I 6:12 understand the why of why I need to be 6:15 resilient but I also need to understand 6:17 the how to become more resilient and 6:19 purposeful gives me a house so I can 6:22 just put in the explore page pain from 6:25 knee surgery and it came up with some 6:27 really good ideas including give your 6:29 body a commercial break so you might 6:32 want to try this if you're using the 6:33 purposeful application you can go ahead 6:35 and use that explore page to explore 6:37 what kinds of action goals or habits you 6:40 could start building around any 6:42 intention that you decide to set 6:45 so in other words there's a why from my 6:47 do goals that is my beagles my purpose 6:50 in life there's also a how from I do 6:52 goals 6:53 those are my action goals
