Rajiv Ghimire Talks Climate Solutions, Finding Hope in Creativity, and Why Science Alone Won’t Save the Planet

By incorporating conservation, development, adaptation, mitigation, social justice, and innovation, this series opens pathways to sustainable and successful climate solutions.
Rajiv Ghimire, lecturer at the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability, has taken his experience as an international researcher and sustainability scholar to create the third course in the series, “Innovative Climate Solutions.” His work revealed the importance of building on existing capacities of the local populations being impacted by climate change, and sharing that knowledge with current and future climate professionals.
Ghimire designed the course for those seeking innovative climate solutions that actually make a difference, whether they’re active environmental specialists or advocates interested in helping their communities. He spoke about the importance of the human element in designing climate solutions, why communication is as important as technology, and how even small ideas can make a big impact.

Many climate courses focus primarily on environmental science. What makes this series different?

Most climate courses focus on physical science, such as global warming, atmospheric carbon levels, and complex data models. While that science explains why the planet is warming and some of its physical impacts, it doesn’t show us how to fix it on the ground. Science alone can’t solve a problem that is fundamentally about human behavior, policy, and community trust.
What makes this series special is that we bring the human element to the front and center. We look at how technology, local policies, and grassroots ideas interact with daily life. Built by faculty members with hands-on experience across the globe, the series moves beyond abstract models to provide learners with practical, real-world tools and renewed perspectives that they can use in their own communities.

A central theme of this series is that climate solutions must also work for the communities they affect. Why was it important to put people and equity at the center of the curriculum?

It is crucial to put people and equity at the center because a climate strategy that ignores local people simply won't work in the long run. The communities hit hardest by climate change are often the ones who contributed the least to it. If we design solutions in a vacuum- that means, without listening to local voices, respecting local and indigenous knowledge, or prioritizing fairness- we risk causing more harm than good.
Whether you’re planting drought-resistant crops, restoring wetlands, or setting up a neighborhood solar project, success comes down to co-creation and shared benefits. We put people at the heart of this series so decision-makers learn how to build real trust, earn local buy-in, and ensure no community gets left behind.

Climate change is one of the defining challenges of our time. What gives you hope about the future of climate solutions?

Hope for me isn't just wishful thinking; it comes from seeing real people take action every day. Whether it's farmers in South Asia testing climate-smart practices or city planners in Ann Arbor, for example, setting ambitious goals and redesigning neighborhood green spaces, communities everywhere are rolling up their sleeves and adapting.
What excites me most is seeing how small, local ideas can ignite big shifts when paired with smart policy and creative tools. When you empower people with the right skills and governance structures, human creativity takes over. Seeing people cross borders and cultures to solve these shared challenges proves that positive change is well within our reach.

Outside of the classroom, how do you stay connected to the environment?

Growing up in Nepal, nature wasn't something I just read about in a textbook; it was a way of life that shaped how I saw the world. I've stayed connected to the environment over the years through hiking, visiting parks, and nature areas. Whether trekking through the Everest and Annapurna regions, hiking the desert trails of Arizona, or spending quiet afternoons along Michigan’s Huron River, local metro parks or nature walks around the neighborhood, being outside keeps me motivated.
Early on, my focus was primarily on physical science and natural ecosystems. But as I spent more time in those landscapes and particularly after I started my doctoral studies that also focused on human and social sides, I realized you can't separate the environment from the people who live in it. I began to understand the true nature of the coupled human-nature system, particularly the local culture, social justice, and our shared responsibility to nature. That personal evolution is the heart of this course series: moving beyond isolated environmental science to embrace the human stories and strength of everyday people that make real climate solutions possible.
