From Python to Leadership: One Educator’s Journey with Michigan Online
I'm enjoying improving my skills… from one of the best universities in the world from my laptop at home
Mohamed Amneh Syrian, from the UAE, discusses learning Python, web design, and improving his leadership and communication skills through University of Michigan online courses.
Because of a natural love for learning, a need to be well-versed in a variety of disciplines, and the desire to continually learn new skills, teachers also make the best students. That is why it’s no surprise to hear that Mohamed Amneh Syrian, who lives and works in the United Arab Emirates as a K-12 e-learning coordinator, is a voracious learner who has taken advantage of many online courses on Coursera.
“My advice to everyone is to seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave,” Syrian said.
An online quest for new skills to help him in his career as an e-learning coordinator led Syrian to a variety of course offerings from the University of Michigan.
Between June 2020 and August 2022, Syrian took six course series, with each series typically taking between 16-20 weeks to complete. He was introduced to University of Michigan’s catalog of courses through the Applied Data Science with Python specialization so he could stay up to date on essential skills. He quickly embraced the course and soon after enrolled in more, Syrian said, completing Web Design for Everybody: Basics of Web Development & Coding specialization, and the Python 3 Programming specialization.
But it was the courses beyond programming that Syrian said might help him most in his career as an educational technology specialist. He took two specializations offered by Patrick Barry of the University of Michigan Law School, Good with Words: Writing and Editing, and Good with Words: Speaking and Presenting, and one from the Ross School of Business, Leading People and Teams.
These courses, Syrian said, provided him skills, techniques and, most importantly, confidence.
“Especially after taking Leading People and Teams, which helped me improve my leadership skills, and taught me how to inspire and motivate individuals, manage talent, influence without authority, and lead teams,” Syrian said.
“I'm enjoying improving my skills in python, data science, leading teams, and coaching from one of the best universities in the world from my laptop at home.”
