Our Commitment to Digital Accessibility

Report a Barrier

If you encounter accessibility barriers that prevent you from fully participating in and receiving benefits from Michigan Online learning experiences, we encourage you to let us know through our Accessibility Feedback Form. Information submitted through this feedback form can only be accessed by University of Michigan staff and will not be shared publicly. Our staff will reach out to you to address your questions.

Third-party sites and software: While the University of Michigan is not responsible for the accessibility of third-party sites or applications that may be linked from our courses, we still encourage you to report associated third-party accessibility issues so that we can ensure you are able to participate. In such cases, we may contact you for additional information as we investigate ways of removing accessibility barriers or to suggest accessible alternatives.

University of Michigan's Digital Accessibility Strategic Initiative

At the Center for Academic Innovation, we are committed to developing accessible learning experiences for the widest possible audience. We recognize that learners with disabilities (including but not limited to visual impairments, hearing impairments, cognitive disabilities, or motor disabilities) might need more specific accessibility-related support to achieve their learning goals. As part of the University of Michigan's Digital Accessibility Strategic Initiative, we are dedicated to integrating digital accessibility into our everyday practices and ensuring that all digital content and technologies are usable by everyone, including individuals with disabilities.

Key Goals of the Digital Accessibility Strategic Initiative

  • Shared Responsibility: Encouraging everyone at U-M to share responsibility for digital accessibility.
  • Daily Integration: Embedding accessibility into everyday work across all roles.
  • Compliance: Meeting the WCAG 2.1 AA standards by April 2026, in accordance with ADA Title II regulations.
  • Leadership Ownership: Ensuring leaders and managers prioritize and sustain digital accessibility.
  • Equitable Access: Making university teaching, research, and content inclusive and accessible to our entire audience.

How We Are Contributing

  • Implementation: Integrating accessibility best practices into all digital content and services.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Utilizing web accessibility scanning tools to ensure ongoing compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA standards.
  • Support and Resources: Providing tools and resources to help our community members create and maintain accessible digital content.
  • Digital Accessibility Teams: Each college and major campus unit is devising a digital accessibility team. This dedicated group will coordinate and communicate efforts in achieving digital accessibility and compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA standards by 2026. These teams work closely with the ITS Digital Accessibility Team to communicate goals and progress, coordinate work, and leverage central resources. By working collaboratively, we advance the Digital Accessibility Strategic Initiative across our decentralized university, promote inclusivity, and align with our broader commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
