Christopher Lumpkin writes for joy. When he was looking to brush up on the basics of the form he knew exactly where he could turn – his alma mater, the University of Michigan. The native Detroiter, lifetime Wolverine, and Philadelphia resident found Michigan Online the perfect landing spot to explore his passion for communicating.

He completed both Finding Purpose and Meaning in Life: Living for What Matters Most and Good with Words: Writing and Editing. Finding Purpose, taught by Vic Strecher, a professor in the School of Public Health, who researches the root causes of health and well-being, guides learners through the history of purpose, happiness, and teaches people how to identify their purpose and the skills to help them live a purposeful life everyday.

Lumpkin said the Good with Words: Writing and Editing series offered him a chance to pursue his passion in a flexible format.

“As a Michigan alum, I knew any online courses presented by Michigan educators would be quality learning experiences,” Christopher says. “The ‘Good with Words’ specialization fit my needs perfectly. Professor Patrick Barry is an amazing instructor who educates, elucidates, and motivates.”

The biggest advantages to the online course other than Barry’s engaging teaching style was the ability to fit the courses into his busy schedule and make progress at his own pace.

“My schedule needs to be flexible and this format allowed me to get a little work done every day without the rigidity of in-person classes,” Christopher says.

In the end, Michael says he would recommend Michigan Online courses to anyone, and that it’s a great representation of the renowned faculty at U-M.

“U-M is one of the best institutions of higher learning in the world. Furthering your education by enrolling in a Michigan Online course is a great decision.”
